How does itunes and other music stores get the rights to the songs they sell?

How do majore music stores, like itunes, which allow u to downlaod a song for a dollar, get the copyrights to those songs? Also, how much do those copyrights cost?

1. well, I have some songs copyrighted to me in Italy. I registered with "SIAE" and these are the people who itunes must deal with if they want to publish/sell the songs.
2. the deals are done through the RPAA You'll have to contact them for the costs
